While coronavirus pandemic has killed hundreds of people and nearly 400,000 active cases declared globally and still rising – a man in China has died of Hantavirus. The Hantavirus scare comes in a situation when the world is already struggling to find a cure for COVID-19.
According to Global Times, a man from China’s Yunnan province died of Hantavirus while on a bus to the Shandong province. All the fellow passengers on the bus have been tested for the virus.
What is Hantavirus?
In America, Hantavirus is known as the New World and may cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). The previous Hantavirus was known as Old World Hantavirus, which mostly found in Europe and Asia. It may cause Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS).
It is a family of viruses that spread mainly by rodents and can cause various disease syndromes in people worldwide. Each Hantavirus serotype has a specific rodent host spices and spread to people when virus-containing particles stirred into the air via urine, faces, and saliva; less frequently by a bite from an infected host. If you are at risk it is important to avoid actions that raise dust, e.g. sweeping and vacuuming.
Hantavirus can be Fatal
United state’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome can be fatal and has a 38 percent mortality rate. The virus mainly spread from rodents, and anyone who is infected can spread the disease among people.
The Risk Factors
Mostly forestry workers and farmers have an increased risk of exposure. A person who comes into contact with Hantavirus carrier rodent is at risk of HPS. Even rodent remains in and around a home have the primary risk for Hantavirus exposure. If healthy individuals exposed to the virus, they are also at risk for HPS.
Signs and Symptoms
Fever, fatigue, and muscle aches, especially in the large muscle group such as hips, thighs, back, and sometimes shoulders.
Infection occurs when you breathe in virus particles.
Symptoms may develop between 1 and 8 weeks after exposure to fresh urine, dropping, or saliva of infected rodents.
Due to limited information and fewer cases, a person may easily get confused with its early symptoms. It has the same initial symptoms as coronavirus like fever, muscle aches, and fatigue. If infected individuals are recognized early and received an intensive care unit medical treatment, may do better.
This disease is symptomatic, so:
Maintain fluid balance
In case of renal insufficiency, dialysis may be required
European hantavirus does not spread person-to-person, isolation is not required
Accept Ribavirin, there is no other vaccine available in Europe. It is the only drug doctors can use in severe Hantavirus infection.
